Race leader Tadej Pogacar abandoned the Vuelta a España after crashing during the eighth stage. The world champion, who was looking to complete a complete series of Grand Tour victories, crashed with about 33 km to go. Pogacar, 27, was in the middle of the pack when he fell off his bike, injuring his left shoulder and cutting the left side of his face. The Slovenian appeared to try to get back on his bike before sitting back down. He then walked unassisted to an ambulance to mark the first time he abandoned a Grand Tour. The six-time Grand Tour winner was on course to win the sport’s three biggest stage races, having already won five Tours de France and one Giro d’Italia.
