Five students and four teachers were in the special needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday afternoon when a 16-year-old gunman burst into the room and shot and killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, Bend-La Pine School District spokesman Scott Maben said Monday. The shooting also injured a student, Saylor Graham, 7, and another staff member, Becky Drury, a special education staff member, police said. It had not previously been reported that there was another child in the classroom who survived the incident, along with another special education staff member. “Two others were present,” Maben told The Oregonian/OregonLive via text message Monday. He said he did not know the age of the fifth student. “The attacker physically injured them,” Maben said. “I can’t say if they suffered any injuries from running or hiding. (The school district hasn’t) received details on that yet.” All staff members, including learning specialist Megan Lambert, 25, who was killed, were direct employees of the school district, Maben said. The horrific encounter unfolded in minutes and ended only after a teacher inside the special needs classroom attempted to wrestle the firearm away from the 16-year-old attacker as he opened fire on those in the room, and when a school parent who had chased the teen fatally shot him. The shooter was last enrolled in Bend-La Pine schools in November 2025, Maben said. He had previously attended Silver Rail as a student with special needs, along with three other district schools and a program run by the district office that Maben described as an option for students who need “extra support.” The events also added Oregon to a grim and growing list of states shaken by a fatal mass shooting at an elementary school. Police continue to look for clues to understand what motivated the suspect. School buildings throughout the Bend-La Pine School District remained closed Monday and Tuesday; Social media was flooded with local parents offering to care for the children of their fellow caregivers who had to return to work. The exception is Silver Rail itself. Maben said conversations about when students will return to school are ongoing and will be held after consultation with building staff and parents. On Monday, Drury’s husband, who had been rushed to the St. Charles Bend campus for treatment, said in a statement that his wife continued to recover from her injuries. “He still has a long road ahead of him,” Will Drury said. “She is an incredible woman who continues to show courage and resolve through all of this. For anyone who knows my wife, that won’t be a surprise.”
