The concept inherits the spirit of the Multipla, but Fiat insists that it does not foresee a specific production model for the future. Fiat has launched the new Multiplay concept in Paris. It combines elements of SUVs, minivans and trucks. It has a family cabin in the Multipla style. Fiat Multipla fans rejoice: the spirit of the polarizing minivan is back in a peculiar concept. The Multiplay is a modular vehicle that transforms from a family SUV with minivan features to a lifestyle van. The “3 in 1” concept takes center stage at the Paris Motor Show. In the words of Fiat itself, the objective was to combine “the spatial efficiency of a minivan, the character of an SUV and the versatility of a pick-up”, creating a unique vehicle that meets the needs of “a family that combines work, school, sports and outdoor activities”. More: Fiat revives the Multiplina and launches new Topolino editions Visually, the Multiplay looks like an evolution of the 2024 Fiat Concept Pick-Up, albeit with a much shorter bonnet, a different greenhouse and a revised lighting signature that retains the Grande Panda’s pixel-style LEDs. It also has generous ground clearance and plastic cladding around the wheel arches reminiscent of a crossover minivan. Stellantis The most interesting feature, however, is its ability to transform into a different body style thanks to what Fiat calls the “Metamorfosi” architecture. The rear part of the roof slides forward along with the third row of seats, turning the Multiplay into a four-seater van with a double cab and exposed cargo space at the rear. More: Fiat’s cheapest hatchback crossover gains a new name and a new mission In truck form, the concept has a split tailgate, a retractable bed cover and a smart modular floor system to secure cargo in place. Additionally, the roof spoiler can rotate, revealing an integrated bike rack to carry a couple of bikes. Stellantis The Multiplay is 4.45 m (172.5 in) long, which is shorter than a Jeep Compass. Still, when dressed as an SUV it has a three-row interior with a 6+1 seating configuration designed for family use. More: Fiat’s new Grizzly SUV is chasing the biggest Dacia, and it didn’t come alone The number six is used deliberately, as the 1955 Fiat 600 Multipla could seat six people in three rows despite being 3.5 m (137.8 in) long. In a similar context, the 1998 Fiat Multipla came with a six-seater design in two rows and was only 3,994 mm (157.2 in) long. The +1 refers to a “Petsenger seat” in the second row, which is distinguished by the lack of backrest and green upholstery. The rest of the interior is bathed in orange, with green accents on the futuristic dashboard, a yoke steering wheel, and an ultra-wide screen. Another interesting touch is the front passenger seat, which folds down into a comfortable recliner in combination with the cylindrical pillow on the dashboard. Stellantis The automaker did not go into detail about the concept’s underpinnings or powertrain type. Still, with no room for a combustion engine in the front, it will most likely be an electric vehicle. Will they achieve it? Fiat insists that the Multiplay does not show any specific production model. Instead, it was conceived as “a laboratory of solutions for the mobility of tomorrow”, meaning that some of its peculiarities could find their way into the future range. While the “3-in-1” concept is too crazy for production, Fiat could always introduce a unibody truck based on the underpinnings of the Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback. This could adopt a Panda-inspired styling language and eventually replace the Fiat Toro in South America. The production version of the Concept Pick-Up from 2024 could be mounted on the Smart Car architecture, which is compatible with gasoline, mild hybrid and fully electric powertrains.
