AI is even coming for sports journalism jobs in Madden 27

A new Madden game is coming out, and with it, a new set of details that will delight or disappoint fans of the long-running franchise. It looks like this year’s game has some pretty big leaps in gameplay. There are time-based captures that aim to add another layer to battles by jumping into the air, and the weather now changes over the course of a game, rather than simply being set to “Rain = On.” As for the most important features outside of the digital field, they can be found in franchise mode. As Axios’ Herb Scribner notes, Madden 27 “turns you into a news junkie,” with flashing breaking news cards and a symbol at the bottom of the screen to make the league you’re playing in feel more alive. According to Scribner, the new game “features a new franchise mode based on an AI ‘personality engine’ that creates headlines and item cards that represent the decisions players must make.” That’s right, folks, sports journalism jobs aren’t even safe from the AI takeover of the Madden universe. Jokes aside, the feature seems set to change up some of the potentially more monotonous aspects of the game, with Scribner writing: “Instead of completing a list of tasks as a team owner, players must click on headlines and make decisions around a media narrative.” It makes sense. Beyond the game’s news system, the character engine is also used in a revamped free agent period, giving players personalities with different goals and values in terms of money, years, and guarantees on a new deal. Since the turn of the millennium, the NFL has worked to become a year-round league with free agency, the combine, the draft and the release of the annual schedule taking up space on the calendar between the Super Bowl of one season and the start of the next. The fact that so much of modern Madden involves managing a team’s salary cap and offseason needs is the strongest evidence yet of the league’s success in that goal. There is at least one journalist safe in the Madden-verse, as RedZone’s Scott Hanson is back as one of the in-game voices to present weekly recaps for those playing Franchise mode with updates from across the league. Another update that Hanson enjoys sharing in one of the game’s trailers is that, for the first time in Madden history, actual coordinators will be on the sidelines of every game. This sounds a bit like when Mark Zuckerberg excitedly announced the addition of “legs” to the metaverse, but for any big Davis Webb fans, this game is for you. Madden 27 will be widely available on August 13.
