OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — A 63-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man were found shot to death Friday morning outside their home in Oakland, near the Berkeley border, according to the Oakland Police Department. Police said a firearm was found nearby. Officers surrounded the home in the hills above UC Berkeley on Friday morning as the Oakland Police Department’s homicide unit investigated. “The call came from a neighbor who heard gunshots. He is currently being investigated by the Oakland homicide unit,” said Deputy Police Chief Casey Johnson. Johnson said both victims had been shot to death. Police have not determined the circumstances surrounding the shooting. When asked if investigators were considering the possibility of a murder-suicide, Johnson said the department had not ruled anything out. “We’re looking into this. We’re not ruling anything out, but it’s unknown at this time,” Johnson said. The shooting occurred near the Berkeley-Oakland border, leaving nearby residents shaken. “Whoever it is, this is tragic, and my concern is that this will increase calls for police surveillance, more technology, license plate readers, and that’s not what’s helpful,” said Steve Kanofsky, a Berkeley resident. Neighbors said residents generally kept to themselves. “It’s pretty shocking that we don’t see much of the people who live there. They’re not really involved in the neighborhood community.
