French media respond to M. Le Pen’s ‘Kevlar suit’ comments against investigative outlet

Le Pen said on Tuesday that Médiapart, an investigative outlet that published alleged anti-Semitic comments by RN party president Jordan Bardella earlier in the week, would have to put on a “bulletproof suit” to deal with the party’s response. Polls currently show that Le Pen will win the first round of the French presidential election on April 18, 2027. Editorial board statement (click here to see the original in French): We, journalists working in newsrooms with different editorial lines, jointly and unreservedly condemn the death threats made by the National Rally against our colleagues at Mediapart, and the numerous attacks by the far right against journalists throughout the country. By suggesting Mediapart put on its “Kevlar suit” (i.e. a bulletproof vest), Marine Le Pen is pointing the gun at journalists’ backs. These violent attempts at intimidation are the hallmark of authoritarian regimes around the world and are particularly worrying for the right to information that the people of a democratic country have a right to expect. Freedom of the press, guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights and international law, makes journalism an indispensable check on power. It is alarming that political leaders who aspire to govern the country can act in this way. Journalists investigate based on evidence, report facts, explain, analyze and see through well-oiled communication campaigns according to ethical standards, no matter where their medium leans. They should never be bullied for doing their job.
