Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is headed to the disabled list with a sprained thumb, manager Aaron Boone told reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. The team has not yet announced the move. José Caballero will start at second base tonight. Chisholm injured his thumb sliding to second in the eighth inning of last night’s game. He was ejected trying to turn a single into a double. Caballero replaced Chisholm on defense in the ninth inning. Boone added that Chisholm will not have baseball activity for seven to 10 days. With only 18 games left in the regular season, he could be out until the playoffs. It’s Chisholm’s first IL season of the year. He was on pace to set a new career-high in games played this season. The infielder has made 134 appearances in 2026, which puts him in range of surpassing the 147 games he played in 2024, before the injury. Chisholm has brought his typical combination of power and speed. He has hit 19 home runs and stolen 40 bases. Overall, he is hitting .232/.312/.403 in 520 plate appearances. Chisholm tied a career high with that stolen base total. Chandler Simpson recorded his 40th steal last night to tie him with Chisholm for the lead in the American League standings. Simpson and Bobby Witt Jr. (39 steals) will face off with Chisholm out of the running. Caballero posted a wRC+ of 85 while bouncing around the diamond. He opened the season as the club’s regular shortstop. The veteran was passed by Anthony Volpe and then George Lombard Jr., but still found his way to near-regular playing time. Caballero isn’t the same caliber of hitter as Chisholm, but the pattern of his production is similar. He has 13 home runs and 31 stolen bases while reaching base at a disappointing .292 clip. Knight should be an improvement on the keystone. He has been a positive defender at second base by Defensive Runs Saved in all four seasons of his career. Chisholm has posted a career-worst -8 DRS this year. Chisholm’s injury could be the opportunity Volpe needs to return to the big league club, although that move does not appear imminent. As Greg Joyce of the New York Post points out, Volpe is in the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lineup tonight. So is coach Max Schuemann. Oswaldo Cabrera, however, was not included in the RailRiders starting nine. Cabrera has only played three games with the Yankees this year.
