Blizzard’s worst kept secret of recent times has been revealed. This is the World of Warcraft version of “Classic+”. The current retail incarnation of World of Warcraft is fun, but it’s a strangely lonely experience. The game’s matchmaking systems introduced a few years ago have, at this point, really damaged the social fabric of the game, reducing player interactions to the basics and functional for maximum efficiency. World of Warcraft Classic, complete with retro graphics, was Blizzard’s attempt to bring back the old style of WoW it used to offer, in response to hacked servers from players longing for old-school WoW. WoW arguably had a lot more RPG depth in the past, even if it was mechanically more simplistic overall (I don’t miss the one-button damage rotations and effectively useless talent specs). At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard revealed “World of Warcraft Forever,” which is their take on the community’s “Classic+” request. That’s how it works. Blizzard’s “Season of Discovery” was their first attempt at this, but WoW Forever seems much more ambitious. WoW Forever revamps three classic zones and adds three additional ones on top. It also adds three new raids, a new battlefield, and a new race to Skyborne elves (yes… more elves). WoW Forever also adds “thousands” of new quests and new content to existing classic zones. WoW Forever exists in a time bubble of sorts. The idea is for Blizzard to continue expanding the level 60 experience in WoW Forever, adding new raids, quests, and content horizontally instead of vertically. As of this writing, it’s unclear if this exists in a timeline separate from the current WoW, giving Blizzard narrative license to diverge from the retail channel. As far as I know, Skyborne elves aren’t mentioned anywhere in the current story, for example, unless Blizzard finds some clever way. to incorporate them retroactively. Blizzard also teased WoW’s next retail content patch in the form of “Eclipse,” where players will take the fight to Xal’atath for a final showdown.
