The area surrounding the Chestnut Tree Inn is cordoned off with police tape. The suspect sought by Joni Auden Land/OPBA and a Portland Police Bureau K-9 are dead following a shooting in Southeast Portland, officials confirmed Thursday afternoon. More than 40 emergency units responded to the scene. Police cordoned off several blocks around the hotel. The shooting occurred after a regional violent criminal task force located a wanted suspect in the area, Portland Police Bureau spokesman Mike Benner told reporters. Benner confirmed that the suspect and the K-9 were killed during the incident. Police officials confirmed the man had a felony warrant, but did not provide any further details about him or why he was wanted by the task force. Benner also did not disclose additional details about what led up to the shooting, citing an ongoing investigation. He said the shooting occurred during a pre-planned operation. Two Portland police officers are on administrative leave, officials said, as are two officers from other agencies on the task force. The task force includes the U.S. Marshals Service, the Gresham Police Department and the Multnomah and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Offices. The K-9, named Kylo, had been transported to at least two different veterinary clinics for emergency care, Benner said. “Our members are reeling from that. They are also reeling from the loss of a human life,” Benner said. “You hear Chief (Bob) Day talk about the sanctity of life all the time. But as for our K-9? We are sorry.” Thursday would be the K-9’s last shift, police officials said. He served six years in the office. Day choked back tears as she described how tragedy replaced what was meant to be a day “of celebration and retirement.” “Watching them work is really a beautiful thing,” Day said. “They are part of our family. And they play a role that is so critical to the safety of our officers, but also to the safety of our community. I am truly very grateful for Kylo’s service.” a lot. An OPB reporter at the scene said officers were interviewing people at the Chestnut Tree Inn. Several passersby separately recalled that, around 2 p.m., they saw several patrol cars arrive at the scene after a burst of gunfire. Ryan Kowal, a transient, lives with his wife in a hotel across the street. “Honestly, it’s a surprise,” Kowal said. “It’s not something you’d expect to see during the day.” According to Benner, the last Portland Police Bureau K-9 to die in the line of duty was a 3-year-old German shepherd named Mick who was responding to a robbery with his handler.
