Matthew Brennan emerged victorious on stage 16 of the Vuelta a España to claim his fourth stage victory of this year’s race. The British Visma Lease-a-bike rider raced to victory ahead of Bryan Coquard and Vito Braet in Palos de la Frontera. Brennan, 21, held up four fingers to celebrate each of his four stage wins in his first Grand Tour. “It’s incredible, four wins here and the plan was one,” Brennan said after the 181km stage. Stage 16 was expected to be another opportunity for the sprinters. A five-man breakaway was launched from the beginning, but with 100 km to go the peloton began to catch up. The break was taken advantage of with about 23 km left, setting up the group’s final sprint. Spanish cyclist Enric Mas of Team Movistar maintained his lead of 2 minutes and 6 seconds in the general classification over Félix Gall, with Primoz Roglic four seconds further. The next stage will take place on Wednesday and will consist of 185 km between Dos Hermanas and Seville, offering another sprint final.
