Frances Tiafoe came from two sets down and a break down to beat fellow American Alex Michelsen in a thrilling comeback to reach the US Open semi-finals. Tiafoe, the 11th seed, was outplayed by world number 46 Michelsen during the first half of the match, but rallied from 5-3 down in the third set, with his opponent serving for the match, to start a notable turnaround. In a final set of multiple breaks and momentum swings, Tiafoe triumphed in the 10-point tie-break to win 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (10-6). The victory means Tiafoe, 28, reaches his third US Open semi-final in five years, where he will play either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American eighth seed Ben Shelton. a match that lasted four hours and 38 minutes. “In the end little by little I started to pick up the pace. I slipped away from the third set and got better and better,” Tiafoe said. “He is a great player and could have easily won today.
