Tuesday’s accident occurred on a link road in the Al-Dawawis area of Ismailia governorate, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram News. listEgypt’s Health Ministry said there were 47 casualties, including about 30 injured. The victims were rushed to the hospital in the nearby city of El-Kassasin. “The majority of the dead are children aged 13 and 14,” a medical source at the hospital told AFP. The youngest victim was 10 years old. The workers were mostly from two villages in Sharqiya governorate and were employed at a farm in Ismailia, a local security source said. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had ordered an investigation into the accident and the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labor said they would provide financial assistance to the families of the dead and injured workers. Vans are a common way for Egypt’s informal workers to get to their jobs. According to official figures, at least 1.3 million minors participate in child labor. Road deaths and injuries in the country have increased by more than 10 percent, according to Egypt’s state statistics agency. Children under 15 years of age recorded the highest number of victims of these types of incidents.
