The maths bust-up fuelling fears that AI is undermining science

In 2024, computer scientist Professor Dmitry Kobak of Ghent University searched more than a million biomedical research articles for trigger words favored by LLMs that generate AI writing. His team found that in December last year, almost 90% had AI fingerprints. AI detection technology is not perfect; Some forms of the software have labeled the United States Constitution, written in the 1780s, as “AI-generated.” But still, Kobak said he was surprised by the scale of the apparent use of AI. There is a risk, he told Nature, that “any bias the LLM may have will suddenly permeate the (scientific) literature.”
