There’s no sign of Sonic Mania 2 happening anytime soon, but Sonic Team boss Takazhi Iizuka has left the door open to the possibility. Believe it or not, Sonic Mania is approaching its 10th anniversary. The title was released in 2017 and many fans were hoping that we would get a sequel. Sonic Mania was definitely a success for SEGA, but the company hasn’t pursued a sequel. At this time there is no information about a sequel in the immediate future. That said, Iizuka said in an interview with Game Informer this month that SEGA still has a great relationship with the Sonic Mania developers and “there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again.” Iizuka said, “We’re still very close with them. We’ve gone out to eat and drink with them because relationships are important to us. They also have a lot of projects they’re working on for what they want to do and what their business needs are. We don’t have anything to talk about right now, but there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again, and we think they could make a great game. It’s not off the books yet, but it’s not something that’s currently moving forward.” Sonic Mania director Christian Whitehead shared images of a sequel prototype last year. In case you missed it, we have it here. Iizuka also previously spoke at length about why the sequel didn’t happen; We have your comments here. If you haven’t jumped into Sonic Mania yet, now is the perfect time to do so. The game is actually at its lowest price right now, although not for much longer. We have the full list of a big SEGA/Atlus sale right now here. Do you still hope we get Sonic Mania 2 someday? Let us know in the comments below. Related
