Preview & Picks: Oregon at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – Oregon and Illinois came into the season with very different expectations. But heading into Saturday’s head-to-head showdown at 2 p.m. CT at Gies Memorial Stadium, both the Ducks and the Fighting Illini are not where they wanted to be halfway through the regular season. Both have exceeded expectations. Oregon entered the season as the No. 2 team in the preseason AP Top 25 and a top ten national title favorite, but the Ducks (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) have struggled to take flight. falling to Oklahoma State and UCLA and barely beating Boise State and Nebraska. They will enter Champaign unclassified. Meanwhile, Illinois entered the season after 19 wins in the previous two seasons and set out to make a third consecutive bowl game for the first time in three decades. But the Illini (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) have so far performed like a bottom-six Big Ten team — falling to Purdue (3-4) in a rivalry game before an overtime win at Michigan State (2-5) — and will most likely be underdogs in at least five of their last six games. Both teams have also lost their starting quarterbacks and will rely on backups on Saturday, although the experience level among the backups is ample. With Oregon star Dante Moore out of concussion protocol from a hard hit to the head in a win over USC last month, Oregon already started two different quarterbacks, Dylan Raiola and Brock Thomas, and benched them. But Raiola, a two-year starter at Nebraska with 23 Big Ten starts and 5,334 passing yards, is expected to start against the Illini after relieving Thomas and leading Oregon to a victory against the Cornhuskers. Meanwhile, Illinois will turn to rookie Michael Clayton II, who will make his first career start with starting quarterback Katin Houser out 4-6 weeks with a hand injury. In relief of Houser, Clayton threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Illinois beat Michigan State two weeks ago. Both teams are desperate to win. For Oregon, keeping its faint College Football Playoff hopes alive (12.9%, per ESPN FPI). For Illinois, keep their dwindling hopes alive (27.4%, according to ESPN FPI). The losing team’s 2026 season goals will take a big hit on Saturday.
