A doctor and medical director at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh was killed in a violent attack inside his Edgewood Borough home that also left his wife injured. Idris Evans, 46, died after he and his wife were stabbed repeatedly while they slept in their home on Linden Avenue early Thursday, police said. A suspect has been arrested. According to court documents, Evans’ wife told police they woke up to a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife. She said he was only wearing underwear and talked about “being God,” according to the report. At some point during the attack, she yelled at her children, ages 8 and 12, to get out of the house and go to a neighbor’s house. She told police that her husband called his attacker by the name “Elijah,” as if he knew him. UPMC The Allegheny County Police Department said they were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Responding officers found a man and woman suffering from stab wounds. Both individuals were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but Evans was pronounced dead. “It was a very violent scene,” said Allegheny County Deputy Superintendent Victor Joseph. “The bedroom furniture was broken, the mirrors were broken. It was a very graphic scene.” Suspect arrested for fatal double stabbing. A man was detained at the scene and on Thursday afternoon police identified him as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway. He has now been charged with Evans’ death. Police said Hemingway entered the home through an open window, went up to the third floor and began stabbing the couple while they slept. They tried to fight back, police said. Investigators said Hemingway was found behind a nearby house with cuts to his hand and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The KDKA news crew at the scene witnessed first responders loading a handcuffed Hemingway into the back of an ambulance. The reason is unknown. “We don’t know if there was any pre-existing relationship,” Joseph said. “The woman did not know this man. We are trying to determine if the two men knew each other.” Hemingway faces charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and burglary. The alleged attack comes just a week before Hemingway returned to court for a burglary in Pittsburgh earlier this year, court records show. In that case he was released on non-monetary bail. ‘Dedicated caregiver’ “Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities,” a UPMC spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected.” According to his University of Pittsburgh profile, Evans was medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital and assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Sandra Trappen lives next door to where the stabbing occurred and said she couldn’t believe how many police surrounded her home, only to discover the suspect was hiding in her backyard. “It was hiding, there’s an area of my garden that’s not particularly well-kept like the other parts,” Trappen said. “He had found a way to hide, but apparently he was injured and bleeding.” Trappen called the incident “incredibly shocking.” ‘Small, tight-knit community’ On Thursday morning, Edgewood police spoke about what they called a tragic event in the community. “We are a small, tight-knit community and we are sure many of you will be feeling shocked today,” police said. “You may be sad, angry, anxious, distracted, or just having a hard time understanding what happened.” Police asked that people be thoughtful about what they share regarding the deadly incident, noting that things like rumors, graphic details, speculation and photographs can make an already difficult situation more difficult for those involved and others in the neighborhood.
