Police issue a ‘shelter in place’ alert during an emergency situation in north Omaha OMAHA, Neb. — Omaha police have lifted an emergency situation for a neighborhood in north Omaha following a barricade situation. “We have the suspect in custody. He has been transported to the hospital to be treated for any injuries. This situation here has been resolved. So we thank the neighborhood for being patient with us as we work through everything tonight,” said Omaha Deputy Chief Sherie Thomas. Previous coverage:Omaha police are urging people to avoid the area of an emergency situation. According to police, there is a barricade situation near 38th and Browne streets. People in the area are urged to stay inside and shelter in place. According to OPD, the incident stemmed from a report of theft at the Westroads Mall just before 7 p.m. Police said officers were able to identify a vehicle of interest that was seen leaving the mall. Officers attempted a traffic stop and the suspect fled. Omaha police said the OPD helicopter followed the vehicle to the area of 37th Street and Grand Avenue, where the suspect exited and fled on foot toward a home near 38th and Browne streets. OPD said officers reported seeing the suspect had a gun and was believed to be still inside the home. According to OPD, two people were inside the home when the suspect entered. KETV crews have since seen two people leave the residence. Omaha police are attempting to negotiate with the suspect in hopes of a peaceful resolution. This is a developing story.
