New Moab excavation site could be oldest Cretaceous dinosaur bonebed in North America

MOAB – A new dinosaur dig site near Arches National Park could be one of the oldest Cretaceous bone sites in North America. Experts in Utah say fossils found at the site outside Moab in eastern Utah could date back to between 138 and 141 million years ago. They also believe the site, which officially opened for excavations in mid-October, could contain a new species of dinosaur. They draw this conclusion in part from the age of the site, which falls between two geological periods: the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. Scientists hope the discovery will help them better understand a mass extinction that occurred during the transition from the Jurassic to Cretaceous period.
