Day-by-day forecastOn Saturday, the heaviest rain will move slightly south and spread eastward. Two rounds of heavy rain, one in the morning and one in the evening, are possible across parts of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. They could remain in those areas, including Chicago and Milwaukee, for several hours with high rainfall rates. On Sunday, the threat of heavy rain may persist from northern Illinois to northern Indiana and western Ohio, while also extending into parts of the Northeast. How much more rain? Additional rain is expected in the darker green of the map below. The biggest concern this weekend is the corridor from eastern Iowa to northern Illinois, northern Indiana and western Ohio, where flooding hit earlier this week. Additional heavy rainfall is likely to cause flash flooding and perhaps some river flooding again. Why the floods? The showers are due to bursts of rain and thunderstorms traveling around the outer edge of a heat dome in the Southeast. Any front that tries to approach slows down and rains over the same areas in the Midwest. The heat dome will remain stationary through the weekend, and areas that could experience further flooding are highlighted on the graph.
