Insomniac Games PlayStation and Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Wolverine” debuted as the best-selling game of September in the United States, according to the analysis firm Circana. Using full game sales data from both physical and digital copies, the PlayStation 5 exclusive had the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since “Helldivers II” in early 2024. That suggests it has surpassed games like “Stellar Blade,” “Ghost of Yotei,” “Death Stranding 2,” “Astro Bot,” “Marathon,” and “Saros” and the “Horizon:” remasters/remakes. “Zero Dawn.” “Days Gone” and “Until Dawn.” It also helped PlayStation 5 revenue increase 43% compared to the same period last year and (along with the pending release of GTA6) drove Sony’s hardware sales to their highest levels since May 2025. Globally, “Wolverine” was the second best-selling PS5 game in September, behind only EA Sports FC 27. It did so even though it was only available for half of the month. Good news for the industry as a whole is that eight of the top ten best-selling games of September were new releases, while “NBA 2K27” surpassed “Resident Evil: Requiem” to become the best-selling game of 2026 so far this year in the United States. Both “NBA 2K27” and “Wolverine” have been the subject of strong reactions online, although for different reasons. “007 First Light”, “MLB: The Show 26” and “Crimson Desert” occupy the third to fifth positions. Total video game hardware unit sales fell 3% in September compared to a year ago: PlayStation 5 was up 22% year over year, Switch 2 unit sales fell 14%, and Xbox Series sales fell 27%. Xbox console unit sales are now at an all-time low. Source: VGC, Metro
