Police kill suspect who shot at Lodi McDonald’s employee, police sayLODI, Calif. — A suspect was killed by police after shooting and wounding an employee at a Lodi McDonald’s Monday morning, authorities say. The Lodi Police Department said officers around 9:30 a.m. went to the McDonald’s at West Lodi Avenue and Church Street for a reported disturbance. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that an employee had been shot, police said. “When officers arrived on scene, they heard gunshots inside and heard screaming. Officers entered the building and eventually an officer involved fired shots,” Corporal William Hinton of the Lodi Police Department said at a briefing Monday afternoon. After the shooting, officers called emergency personnel to assist and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was identified as Jonhatan Anguiano, 29 years old. The employee who was shot was taken to the hospital where she is in stable condition. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. No officers were injured. The surrounding roads and intersection were also blocked. Hinton said he believes this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. “It’s a very rare incident. We haven’t had an officer involved shooting in at least the last five or six years, if I remember correctly. So, it’s pretty rare. But, again, I think it was an isolated incident. So, there’s no threat to the public,” he said. A neighboring business owner said police cars began showing up at the McDonald’s around 10:15 a.m. A witness at the drive-thru recounts the shooting Cheryl Steneck said she was one of three cars trapped in the drive-thru when the shooting occurred. He was able to stop and talk to the woman running the cash register before shots were fired. “I asked the lady on the intercom if there was anything going on inside and she said, ‘Yes, there’s someone with a gun inside,'” Steneck said. Steneck described the tense moments that followed. “We both just didn’t know what to do. We both said we would pray and all of a sudden we heard four gunshots inside. They were inside and she ducked down and put her hands over her head, and I closed the window and I was trapped,” she said. Shortly after shots were fired, Steneck said she and the other cars were escorted off the road. “I was scared to death,” she said. Despite her fear, Steneck remained at the scene, worried about the woman at the drive-thru window. “I honestly wanted to make sure she was okay, and obviously I can’t talk to her yet. I’ll come back later or next week or something like that and give her a hug,” he said. The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting. Other agencies investigating include the Department of Justice, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office. Two nearby schools, Clyde W. Needham Elementary and Needham West, were briefly closed. Anyone with information about the shooting or is a witness is asked to contact Detective Blythe at 209-333-5545.
