Grand Theft Auto VI is riddled with more leaks than a sinking ship, starting with the trailer from three years ago and continuing this week with a gameplay release that sees protagonist, Jason Duval, rob a gas station store, escape in a car, get into a slow-motion car accident, and then escape to a strip club. Some of these gameplay elements will definitely be familiar to long-time fans of the series, but the slow-motion camera that interrupts the game’s normal speed is definitely a novelty, and probably something Rockstar Games wanted to keep under wraps, given that Rockstar hasn’t revealed the actual gameplay yet. In fact, they’ve been saving the biggest reveal for the Netflix release on Thursday, August 27 at 3 pm ET, which in itself is an unprecedented move for a game release. Behind the scenes, Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two are working hard to uncover the source of the leaks, and have reportedly even been granted subpoenas by a federal court for GitHub, Microsoft, and Discord server logs, which they claim will help them uncover the culprits. Even Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet has weighed in on the issue and promised to support efforts to stop the theft, saying in a post on X that “[Xbox] “We are working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property.” It’s also probably doing even more to promote what promises to be the biggest game launch of all time.
