Jeffery Simmons says calling Caleb Williams “Painted Nails” was “just smack talk”

New Bears defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons said his nickname for Caleb Williams two years ago was nothing more than cleverness. Simmons, then with the Titans, jokingly referred to Williams as “Naked Nails” in an NFL Network interview. He said Friday that he thought Bears fans were “going to ruin my Instagram” after that. Now, Simmons, Williams and Bears fans are on the same side after the Tennessee trade. “I’ve been a fan of Caleb,” Simmons said, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. “Of course, being on the other side and having to play against him, I’m not going to tell him that. I’m going to be as rude as I can. “But he’s on my team now. Any teammate you ask about me, man, I have my teammate’s back, whether he’s on the other side of the ball or not. I’m going to talk down to you more when you have a different color jersey, but when we’re on the same team on Sundays, I’ll go to war over any of my guys in the locker room. I hope Caleb knows that.” Simmons said he and Williams spoke after a joint practice in August and again on Friday morning before the meetings. Williams doesn’t fault Simmons for the comment. “The comments from a couple years ago about nails are part of my game, along with the bad language,” Simmons said. “I don’t know if you guys have heard it, but I’m probably one of the best talkers. I talk a lot when I’m in the field. I really want to be your teammate. “We all know what kind of player he is.”
