Iran and the United States exchanged threats on Wednesday after some of the most intense military exchanges in weeks, including an attack on a wedding party that Tehran blamed on Washington and called a “war crime.” President Donald Trump said U.S. forces carried out a “very heavy strike” against Iranian targets overnight and are “prepared to do another one any time we want.” Iran’s security chief warned that the United States would face a “new strategy” in the war that began in late February with American and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic. “You will soon see that Iran’s new strategy on the battlefield, in diplomacy and to confront the economic blockade will shatter its foundations,” the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, wrote in X. In addition to threatening new attacks, Trump also suggested on Wednesday renaming the Strait of Hormuz, the vital oil waterway that Tehran has effectively closed for six months, as “Trump Strait.” “Now that we have it under US control, should we change the name of Strait of Hormuz to STRAIT OF TRUMP???” said the president of the United States in a post on Truth Social. Iran attacked US bases in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and the autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq after extensive US bombing on Tuesday against sites across Iran. Iran reacted with fury after the Iranian Red Crescent said four people, including a child, were killed and more than 50 wounded in a US attack that hit a wedding in southern Iran. “The truth of this illegal election war – and the true face of war crime – is in Sirik, where a wedding ceremony was brutally bombed as part of the United States’ desperate struggle to hide its failure,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei posted on X. The US military did not address the incident directly. US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman Tim Hawkins said that “the US military never attacks civilians, unlike the IRGC,” referring to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. ‘Acts like Satan’ Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, lashed out at Washington over the wedding attack, calling the United States “Satan.” “If a power acts like Satan, chooses targets like Satan, and kills like Satan, it is Satan,” he posted on X. The latest round of fighting began when Washington attacked Iranian targets on Sunday, the first known attacks in several weeks. Tehran’s forces then attacked US troops in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, with projectiles hitting two oil tankers in unclaimed attacks, one of which killed two Filipino sailors, according to a Saudi shipping company. Hossein Moazami, 50, who is self-employed, called the attacks “really distressing.” “I hope everyone returns to the negotiating table because the only ones who suffer from this are the Iranians,” he said. “The Americans are on the other side of the world and nothing happens to them.” A video shared by an Iranian government account showed debris and damage at what it said was the wedding venue in Sirik following the US attack, and people could be heard screaming in the background. “It is a very sad incident… Thank God the victims were not older,” said Ali Mallahi, father of the bride and owner of the building hit, in a video broadcast on state television. The war began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A fragile ceasefire collapsed after attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil supply previously flowed.
