Burnham previously said there are strong indications that Iran was linked to last month’s apparent plot to attack RAF Fairford air base, which has been used by US bombers to attack Iran in the ongoing war. Police arrested seven men in the investigation into the alleged plot, but all suspects were released on bail and no one has been charged so far. “I can confirm our assessment that it was very likely coordinated in Iran, almost certainly led by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” Burnham told lawmakers. “We will not tolerate these threats on our soil.” Related Videos 1:49 Trump backs down from threat of new attack on Iran as midterm elections approach Previous video Next video Story continues below advertisement Dozens of residents near the air base were evacuated from their homes on September 27 as armed police officers and Army bomb disposal experts swarmed the countryside. Police later said they had found a quantity of accelerant (gasoline) in three vans linked to the initial five suspects, but no explosives. All of the arrested suspects are in their 20s and six are British citizens, while one has dual British and Iranian citizenship. On Monday, the British government summoned the Iranian ambassador to express its displeasure at “Iran’s continued attempts to undermine the security of the United Kingdom and its international partners through its criminal networks, proxy groups and state-backed malign activities.” The United States withdrew its bombers from RAF Fairford last week, and the Trump administration has said it believed the base faced Iranian threats aimed at killing as many American troops and destroying as many American aircraft as possible. © 2026 The Canadian Press
