Gboard Rambler has a usage limit, and here’s what happens when you reach it (Update)

Edgar Cervantes / Android AuthorityTL;DR Google has confirmed what happens when Rambler usage limits are reached. The company says Rambler will switch to offline mode, which still offers basic voice cleaning and transcription. Otherwise, Rambler offers advanced voice dictation intelligence, such as retyping in a specific style. Update: August 19, 2026 (1:18 a.m. ET): A Google representative clarified Rambler’s offline capabilities in an emailed response to Android Authority: When offline, Rambler still removes filler words from dictation, as well as adding punctuation and capitalization. Mainly what requires connectivity are more complex commands, such as rewriting in a particular style or, for example, requesting that a block of text be shorter. Needless to say, it seems like offline voice typing through Rambler could still be an effective solution. Original article: August 18, 2026 (5:50 am ET): Google announced Gboard’s Rambler feature earlier this year, as part of the Gemini Intelligence suite. However, an official support page shows that this voice transcription feature has usage limits. So what does that mean? Google’s support page for Rambler mentions that the smart dictation feature relies on the cloud for its polished transcriptions, but switches to offline models when there is limited or no internet connectivity. However, it also notes that Rambler is subject to usage limits, without elaborating. Now, a Google representative has told Android Authority what happens when the usage limit is reached: Follow up to share an answer to their question, confirming that Rambler switches to offline mode after users have reached the limit. Offline mode is effectively the offline voice typing seen on previous Pixel phones. That means you can take advantage of basic punctuation, capitalization, and cleanliness. Unfortunately, you lose “advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice editing.” Presumably, that means Rambler won’t remove filler words and awkward pauses when you’ve reached the limit. In any case, we’re glad that there is still a basic alternative option for Rambler after reaching the usage limit. But we expect Google to gradually bring smarter transcriptions to offline mode over time. Thank you for being part of our community. Please read our Comment Policy before posting.
