Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom announced they had purchased the more than 12,000-square-foot residence in Fair Oaks, which is just 15 miles from the state Capitol, in 2019. He is now selling his home four months before his term as governor ends and he prepares for a widely anticipated presidential run. Newsom bought the mansion in suburban Sacramento to avoid living in the official governor’s mansion, a 150-year-old property that was home to 13 governors, including most recently Jerry Brown, who moved into the house in 2015 after the mansion served as a museum for decades. Brown moved into the three-story Victorian home after a $4 million renovation, which updated the electrical and plumbing. The last governor to live there before Brown was Ronald Reagan, who lived there for a few months in 1967. Newsom said his decision not to live in the official governor’s mansion was to move to a house that was “more child-friendly.” The seven-bedroom Fair Oaks mansion features a resort-style pool, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar and a tennis court. He bought it at the time for 3.7 million dollars. Matthew Hindy, a real estate agent with Nick Sadek Sotheby’s International Realty, which is listing the property, declined to comment when contacted by SFGATE. Monday’s listing comes as the governor’s family moves 90 miles west to Marin County, where they lived before Newsom’s election. In 2024, they bought a house in Kentfield for $9 million. At the time, his plan was to keep the Sacramento home and split his time between both locations, Politico reported. They also wanted to enroll their oldest daughter in high school as a freshman. All of their children are now enrolled in school in Marin County, according to the outlet. “With the Governor’s term ending in January 2027, the family began a gradual transition in 2024, purchasing a home in Marin County to provide continuity for their children’s education. The sale of their Sacramento home is the next step in that transition,” Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon said in a statement to SFGATE. The office did not immediately respond to whether that means the Newsoms have already moved full-time to Marin. The governor and Siebel Newsom had previously owned a home in Kentfield, where they raised their children until 2018, when Newsom was elected governor. They bought a 1,800-square-foot home, overlooking Mount Tamalpais, in 2011. He bought the home for $5.9 million after leaving his position as mayor of San Francisco and being elected lieutenant governor of California. Newsom is the third consecutive governor to split his time between Sacramento and another part of the state. Brown traveled from Oakland for part of his term and Arnold Schwarzenegger traveled from Los Angeles.
