Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman day-to-day with ‘total body soreness’ after scary fall down dugout steps

That could have been a lot worse for Freddie Freeman. The Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman exited Wednesday’s game after accidentally falling down the concrete steps of the visitors’ dugout at Dodger Stadium in the eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals. He was following a fly ball by Royals outfielder Isaac Collins and lost track of his location in foul territory. Freeman was concussed on the play and received a visit from the Dodgers’ athletic trainers, but remained in the game. However, Freeman was later pulled in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Tommy Edman pinch-hit for him and then remained in the game at second base, with Kiké Hernández moving to cover Freeman at first. The Dodgers won the game 4-2. Afterward, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Freeman was dealing with “total body soreness.” He is reportedly day-to-day, but feels well enough that he apparently does not need X-rays. Freeman was reported to be in good spirits as he spoke to reporters, telling jokes and clarifying that he did not hit his head in the fall. Even with its fourth win in five games, Los Angeles barely needs another injury as it tries to make up for its biggest slump of the season. Freeman, 36, is one of the Dodgers’ most indispensable players, earning the tenth All-Star nomination of his career this season and entering Wednesday with a .305/.378/.472 line.
