In our report, documentation revealed that The Initiative was working on Vertical Slice 1 of the game since April 2025. For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a playable proof of concept that represents the overall quality and experience of the game. The rumor was that this Perfect Dark reboot was planned to be in episodic format, which we honestly didn’t know if it would work then or now. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, there was almost a chance that the Perfect Dark reboot would have survived, as Take-Two Interactive (parent company of Rockstar Games) was in talks with Microsoft and Embracer to finance the game, but as we now know, things didn’t work out as expected, leading to the game’s complete cancellation. Time will tell if Microsoft has plans for the intellectual property. Perhaps with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the property will get another chance to prove itself. If so, it will have to be from another developer, as Microsoft closed The Initiative, led by Daryl Gallagher (formerly of Crystal Dynamics) and established in 2018, in July 2025 as part of a corporate restructuring. While the reboot of the Xbox division has resulted in plenty of studio closures so far, it’s also meant more exclusive consoles for the platform, and even a bold opportunity to finance Hideo Kojima’s spy game Physint. Who knows? Maybe Perfect Dark will see the light under another studio of its own. Save 5% on your next recharge, games, gift cards and virtual currency at Eneba. Use code MP1ST5 at checkout.
