With the rumored Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake finally available, Ubisoft is now hoping for a different kind of Assassin’s Creed. For a while, they’ve been working on Codename Hexe, a mainline entry that’s reportedly ditching the massive RPG glut of recent games in favor of a more traditional linear experience. Set in Germany during the grim witch trials of the 16th century, Hexe aims for a much darker tone. According to internal leaks, the story follows a protagonist accused of witchcraft, Anika Adler, as she tries to survive during the brutal persecutions of the time. Based on these rumors, we have recently discovered exclusive descriptions that flesh out the cast of characters we will meet in this new entry, including some additional story details. As is usual in early details of the project, the names of these characters are most likely internal placeholders and are expected to change in the final game. Still, these descriptions reveal minor story spoilers, so read on with caution. Starting with the protagonist, referred to in these castings as “Petra,” she is described as a passionate and strong-willed woman in her twenties. Characterized as an obedient daughter and a radical thinker, she is portrayed as someone completely unable to accept the restrictive role that society has imposed on her. Her story is joined by two figures who seem to be her parents: “Brigitte” and “Konrad”. Brigitte is a deeply compassionate mother and midwife in her early forties. She’s a particularly interesting figure, as recent rumors suggest she has great relevance to the overall plot, specifically in regards to leaks about the protagonist being a direct descendant of the Auditore lineage. Konrad fits his father’s profile. Described as an orthodox, religious and caring family man, he is saddled with a “dirty job.” This jives with other descriptions that suggest the protagonist’s father acts as the “Neustadt executioner,” adding an interesting dark layer to their family dynamic. The details also shed light on the supporting cast. “Bruno” is presented as an imposing, patriarchal leader with a crude sense of humor, while “Antón” is described as a cunning and ambitious man who outwardly appears respectable but operates in the shadows. Separate leaks have mentioned a character named “Wolfgang” acting as a mentor to the protagonist, so it’s possible that Bruno or Anton are fulfilling this mentor role under a different alias. Completing the cast is “Johanna”, a wealthy but morally bankrupt manipulator; “Theo”, a shy and sensitive young man who acts like a loving little brother; and “Erika”, an attractive, witty but arrogant young woman, obsessed with status. For the modern story, the profiles highlight a character named “Anna.” Described as a motivated and impatient career woman working flat out in a competitive work environment, she specifically lacks the German background of the rest of the cast. This makes it likely that Anna is our window into the Abstergo or Animus Hub part of the narrative. But the most intriguing casting story centers on an older figure known as “Mother Gertrud.” This character is a 65-year-old former town healer who was once trusted by her community until an illness she could not cure devastated the area, turning the town against her and causing serious accusations of witchcraft. Although she was never officially convicted, she chose a life of isolation to survive. Beyond Gertrud’s tragic past, her deep ties to Petra’s family are revealed. Gertrud originally taught Petra’s mother about herbs before she abandoned the healer’s path to marry. Now, Gertrud offers shelter to Petra as she attempts to escape from an antagonistic group called “The Order of the Lamb”, likely a front for the Templars. The same description also mentions the city of Augsburg as Petra’s next dangerous destination. Interestingly, this isn’t the only location linked to the project, as a Rogue TX insider previously reported that Würzburg will appear in a future expansion pass. As exciting as these details are, getting to play Hexe will still require a bit of a wait, and development hasn’t been without its hurdles. In early April this year, reports indicated that the project was hit when around 50 developers were removed from the team amid an internal restructuring phase. But even with the sudden loss of manpower, fans shouldn’t panic just yet. Well-known tipster NateTheHate indicated that the title is still on the way, although we shouldn’t expect it to launch until the second half of 2027 at the earliest.
