The anticipated launch of China’s Chang’e-7 robotic mission, designed to explore the Moon’s south pole in search of water ice (a highly valuable resource that the United States also hopes to use) “cannot take place during this year’s planned window,” according to a statement from China’s Manned Space Engineering Office shared by Chinese state media. The mission was expected to take off on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning Beijing time. It is unclear how soon China will be able to attempt to get the mission off the ground. The precise reason for the delay was not immediately clear. State media only shared that the “lunar probe does not meet the launch conditions” and that the “evaluation was carried out following the principle of prudence, reliability and absolute success of the mission.” The United States and China are competing to build settlements at the Moon’s south pole, where there is believed to be abundant water frozen inside shadowy craters. No mission has yet directly analyzed water on the Moon, as Chang’e-7 will attempt to do. Although the United States has detected and begun estimating the size of water ice deposits using remote sensors on orbiting satellites, it has never successfully sent a probe to drill for the resource. A Texas-based company, Intuitive Machines, sent a mock search for water to the moon in 2025, but the spacecraft stumbled while trying to land on the notoriously treacherous terrain of the South Pole and was unable to complete its mission objectives. But the delay in the launch of Chang’e-7 could put this chapter of the space race (as U.S. officials have referred to the standoff with China) back on competitive footing. The United States has several spacecraft headed to the same lunar region that Chang’e-7 is targeting over the next year. Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic Technologies could launch its Griffin lander to the moon’s south pole in late 2026. And Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin plans to send up to two robotic landers to the moon next year, one of which may include the VIPER rover, a prospecting robot specifically designed by NASA to search for water ice and other lunar resources. The belief that the lunar south pole contains large reserves of frozen water is a key reason why this region has become the main stage for this international competition. The resource has enormous value for deep space exploration and a possible lunar base because it can be converted into breathable air, drinking water or even rocket fuel. It is currently unknown whether water ice is present in sufficient quantities to be useful for these purposes, and Chang’e-7 could help make “significant progress on this question, fine-tuning and focusing experiments for further exploration and testing,” Yuqi Qian, a lunar geologist at the University of Hong Kong, told CNN. Qian said that with Chang’e-7, China’s lunar program is “moving from an exploration program to a resource utilization program.”
