DNR investigates third beaver attack of summer after 10-year-old girl bitten at Seneca Creek State ParkThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources said it is investigating a new beaver attack at a state park, the third reported this summer.According to the agency, Seneca Creek State Park staff received a report Thursday afternoon that a beaver attacked and bit a 10-year-old girl who was visiting the park as part of a summer camp program.DNR said the beaver escaped into the water when camp counselors intervened.The girl was taken to a Bethesda hospital, where she was treated for three laceration to her upper leg.DNR, Montgomery County Animal Services and Seneca Creek State Park staff, are searching for the beaver.The incident is not believed to be related to two beaver attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park, where a 19-year-old man and a 13 year-old boy were bitten in separate incidents last month.Both beavers involved in those attacks tested positive for rabies.At the time, DNR said it was investigating “a possible rabies outbreak within the local beaver population.” The agency said there is no indication of a rabies outbreak in Frederick County or Montgomery County.Because of the beaver attack, a portion of Seneca Creek State Park near Berryville Road and about 1-mile of nearby trail will be closed until further notice.Other areas of the park, including the Lake Area off of Clopper Road in Gaithersburg, remain open to visitors.
