Florida State held its first scrimmage of fall camp Tuesday night, and Mike Norvell covered a lot of ground in his session with reporters afterward. Here’s what stood out.Sixth practice and the team’s first live opportunity, with an emphasis on communication, alignment and tempo. First time in full pads, and he noted some explosive plays on both sides of the ball.Estimated the team ran through 70-80 different plays, working through extended drives with the first group and situational work inside the 10-yard line.Jasen Lopez had a big play, and Norvell said the defense did a nice job swarming to the ball, with a heavy emphasis on stopping the run.Ashton Daniels “did a good job” and has “a lot of confidence” in what the staff is asking him to do. Norvell said you could feel his command and control running the offense, and pointed to some nice throws and placement on third down.Kevin Sperry hit a big vertical shot to Lopez, though Norvell said there are still things in his game to keep working on.Malachi Marshall was out for the scrimmage. Dean Denobile worked with that group in his place.Said the main things he wanted to see were communication in a game-like setting and whether fundamentals from the first five practices carried over into live action. Install will continue into next week.Ousmane Kromah has been “exceptional throughout this camp,” and Norvell said you can see and feel his growth. He also praised the running back room as a whole, specifically naming Samuel Singleton Jr. and Tre Wisner.Micahi Danzy scored a touchdown and has grown immensely as a receiver, according to Norvell.Ashlynd Barker made a couple of big plays at rover, with Norvell saying the position fits him well between his physical traits and leadership.Shouted out Chris Jones and the linebacker room as a group that brings speed, physicality and playmaking.Praised the growth of the Desir twins heading into Year 2.Called the offensive line’s performance solid for a first scrimmage, singling out Bradyn Welch-Joiner at center and pointing to the veteran presence of Xavier Chaplin and Nate Pabst.On special teams, said Adam Scheier has installed a lot already, with some punt and live field goal work Wednesday. Gabe did a nice job on field goals, and Hughes handled punts well, with more kick and punt return work coming this week.In the return game, called Jasen Lopez comfortable back there and noted Jayvan Boggs could work into the punt return mix as he continues to return from injury, alongside Devin Carter and Duce Robinson. Sam Singleton and Danzy are likely to handle kick returns.Addressed the ongoing 2022 class eligibility situation tied to the “5-for-5” ruling, saying the program has been in contact with compliance and that some former players have reached out. Called it a “unique dynamic” and said the staff will continue to work through the process.Said a few players were out and a few others went down during the scrimmage, with more clarity expected on their statuses in the coming days. Sounded confident overall in where the team stands, saying, “I think we are in a pretty good place.”
