Pokémon GO has revealed a host of new details for GO Wild Area 2026, including the ability to display Pokémon backgrounds in Trainer profiles (yay!!!), private Dynamax Battle groups, new special research bonuses, and several avatar items. The updates arrive just ahead of GO Wild Area: Mexico City and GO Wild Area: Sendai, which take place from November 6 to 8, 2026. The adventure continues around the world with GO Wild Area: Global from November 14 to 15, 2026. Here’s everything new Trainers need to know before the event begins. What’s new for GO Wild Area 2026? Pokémon Backgrounds Coming to Trainer Profiles Special Pokémon Backgrounds in Trainer Profile Starting in GO Wild Area 2026, Trainers will be able to display their Pokémon friend’s location background or special background in their trainer profile. These backgrounds will also be visible to friends, giving Trainers a new way to display Pokémon captured during special events and memorable adventures. The feature will be rolled out in stages: November 6, 2026 at 10:00 am local time: Sendai and Mexico City GO Wild Area 2026 location backgrounds will be available to display. November 9, 2026 at 10:00 am local time: The GO Wild Area 2026 special background and all previously published location backgrounds will be available to display additional special backgrounds that will be supported in the future. Important The feature is unlocked based on each Trainer’s local time. Your friends won’t be able to see your partner Pokémon’s background until the feature has reached the scheduled unlock time in their own time zone. Private Dynamax Battles are Finally Here Gigantamax Duraludon One of the biggest gameplay improvements coming with GO Wild Area is the ability to join Dynamax Battles privately. Previously, upon entering a Max Battle room, Trainers would automatically join other participants. Starting in GO Wild Area 2026, trainers will have two options when joining a battle: Battle: Automatically match up with other players in the lobby. Private Group: Enter a group code to join an existing private Max Battle group. This should make it easier for coordinated groups to take on difficult Max battles without being automatically matched with other players. The change comes just in time for Gigantamax Duraludon, Dynamax Dialga, and Dynamax Palkia, all of which appear during GO Wild Area 2026. For more information on their appearances, check out our GO Wild Area 2026: Global guide. Steel Scholar and Dragon Defender medal bonuses. Trainers with tickets participating in GO Wild Area: Global will receive a branching special investigation story starting November 14, 2026 at 10:00 am local time. Trainers must choose between researching Steel-type or Dragon-type Pokémon. Each path awards a corresponding in-game medal and unlocks special bonuses for capturing powerful Pokémon of that type. Steel Scholar Medal Trainers who earn the Steel Scholar Medal will unlock: 1 additional Candy XL by capturing powerful Steel-type Pokémon (trainer level 31+) 1,000 additional Stardust by capturing powerful Steel-type Pokémon Dragon Defender Medal Trainers who earn the Dragon Defender medal will unlock: 1 additional Candy XL by capturing powerful Dragon-type Pokémon (trainer level 31+) 1,000 additional Stardust by capturing powerful Steel-type Pokémon Dragon type Bonuses activate after claiming the corresponding medal, instead of immediately after choosing a research path. Both sets of bonuses expire when GO Wild Area: Global ends on November 15, 2026 at 6:00 pm local time. Unlike global participants, Trainers with tickets attending Sendai or Mexico City will have the opportunity to earn both medals through their in-person Event Special Research, unlocking both sets of bonuses until the conclusion of the global event. Adventure Effects Can Be Activated in Battle Lobbies Beginning with the Into the Wild event, Trainers will be able to activate select Adventure Effects while waiting in a Raid or Max Battle lobby. This includes adventure effects associated with: Crowned Sword Zacian’s Giant Sword Crowned Shield Zamazenta’s Giant Strike Instead of activating an adventure effect before joining a lobby, Trainers can prepare their bonuses while assembling their battle group.
