At the Android Dev Summit 2026 earlier this week, Google said that detachable Googlebooks will be the next form factor after foldables and convertibles. This revelation at Wednesday’s developer conference isn’t particularly surprising given the leaks from earlier this year. On stage, Google highlighted how the Googlebook “spans large-screen form factors, from foldable, convertible, and soon detachable devices.” At launch, four of the five devices are foldable: the $899 Acer Googlebook 14 is the only convertible with a 2-in-1 form factor that allows for laptop, tent, and tablet modes. In particular, the day-one limitations suggest that Google has some work left before launching a pure detachable device. While full-screen apps can be opened in tablet portrait mode, the Googlebook OS home/desktop screen, overview, and app tray are only available in landscape mode. There’s even a light bar next to the camera. This device was leaked along with a laptop smaller than the current 15-inch model. With Googlebook OS coming to tablets, a broader question is what operating system high-end Android tablets will use in the future. There should certainly still be room for Android tablets, but the Googlebook OS, in theory, allows for a more desktop-like experience as the company continues to iterate.
