12 injured, including several children, in Tallahassee, Florida, shooting

Twelve people, including several minors, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium, where homecoming festivities included a football game Saturday. The Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement that 11 of the 12 were shot and that three victims had serious injuries, and one juvenile was in serious condition. The others, he said, are in stable condition. Six of the injured are under the age of 18 and the youngest is 11, Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department said at a news conference early Sunday morning. “Our preliminary information shows that an altercation occurred between individuals,” he added, describing it as “an isolated incident between two or three individuals.” “To determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people responsible for this to justice,” he added, calling on witnesses to come forward. The violence unfolded around 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to Bragg Memorial Stadium, he said. Earlier in the evening, the Florida A&M Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for the historically black university’s annual homecoming game. After the shooting took place, the university issued a statement on X asking members of its university community to stay away from the area. He described the shooting as taking place “near the campus,” which he said was safe. “Our hearts go out to the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said. Florida State University, about a mile away from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence and said it did not appear anyone from its school community was involved. “Out of an abundance of caution, students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area are advised to stay home tonight and remain alert,” he said. Revell offered his condolences to the victims and their families, and also praised the officers, he said. He ran without hesitation “into the middle of this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims we had.” “We had officers who picked up the victims and carried them in their arms to transport them because they couldn’t get through the mass of people,” he said. The investigation into the violence was ongoing and police asked witnesses to come forward.
