Two people were killed and several others were injured when a vehicle drove onto a field during a football game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, authorities said. The driver of the vehicle is in custody and “there is no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver,” said Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department. Among the dead are a child and an adult, Moses said. They have not been identified. Two “young men” were inside the vehicle when it drove through the Stryker sports complex around 3:25 p.m. local time, Moses said. The vehicle remained at the scene, he added. Many families and children were in the field when it happened, witnesses told CNN affiliate KWCH. An attendant told the station he was with his family when a black pickup truck jumped the curb and entered the field. Two witnesses also described hearing a loud noise at that time. The incident prompted a large police response at the soccer field, which is fenced and has a concrete track leading to a parking lot, KWCH reported. It’s still unclear how the vehicle breached the gate or what speed it was driving, Moses said. Authorities are working to notify the victims’ families and have not yet released their ages, Moses said. It is not clear which soccer clubs were at the camp, he said. Games in a state flag football championship game were suspended while police investigate the scene on the adjacent Stryker Complex field, the Kansas State High School Activities Association said in a statement. Police are expected to hold another news conference to provide more information Saturday night, Moses said. This is a developing story and will be updated.
