The CBS News foreign editor embarked on a pre-planned team-building cruise after the meeting was leaked on what one aide called “the strangest damn night.” Noam Galai/Noam Galai/Getty Images for The Free Press Bari Weiss’s hand-picked CBS News foreign editor threatened to fire staff for “insubordination” during a 15-minute tirade that was leaked to the media newsletter Status. Shayndi Raice, The Wall Street’s former Middle East Journal bureau chief, blew up Tuesday morning in a virtual editorial meeting about the internal backlash over the network’s coverage of Gaza. “This is not your publishing platform,” Raice said in the leaked audio recording. “This is a company that we all work for and there is a hierarchy. And at the end of the day, you have to answer to that hierarchy.” Shayndi Raice joined CBS News in May. “If you can’t respond to that hierarchy and don’t listen to what we say, that’s called insubordination and it’s legal grounds for firing,” he added. Earlier this week, Status reported, CBS boss Weiss clashed with 60 Minutes journalist Lesley Stahl over a report on increasing violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Bari Weiss was named editor-in-chief of CBS News by Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison. Stahl joined CBS News as a reporter in 1972. Ultimately, Williams’ story did not air. Raice later attempted to ease tensions with staff on a pre-planned team-building cruise after details of the meeting were leaked. Status reported that he apologized directly to some members of the foreign office for his tone during the meeting. Several key correspondents left within 60 minutes of Weiss’ inauguration. Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega and Scott Pelley were fired, while Anderson Cooper voluntarily resigned. Weiss named Raice to replace Claire Day, a 25-year veteran of the network who reportedly left after clashing with Weiss. Weiss, who was named editor-in-chief of CBS News in October 2025, has had a controversial tenure that has included the resignation or firing of most 60 Minutes correspondents, her appointment. of Tony Dokoupil as a CBS Evening News anchor who failed to boost ratings, and complaints about his management style and lack of television experience.
