Teacher and 5-year-old student killed in Oregon school shooting identified

Two of the four victims who died in the shooting at an Oregon elementary school on Thursday were identified as teacher Meghan Lambert, 25, and student Rhoam Summer, 5, Bend police announced Friday. Kelik Summer posted in a Facebook group Thursday night that it was “the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting. We are devastated and lost, but we are surrounded by friends and family who are keeping us safe.” “Meghan was compassionate and had a huge heart,” Lambert’s family said in a statement read during a news conference Friday. “She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs. She was an incredible sister, daughter, niece and granddaughter. Her friends became her family. She was funny and opinionated, and she lit up the room.” Two other children, ages 8 and 11, also died in the shooting. The families of those two children have not released their names, Bend police said. A 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher were injured. The 7-year-old girl was being treated at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, where she was in serious but stable condition, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said Friday. The 54-year-old teacher suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Krantz said. She was being treated at St. Charles Medical Center. Their names were not revealed. Krantz identified the suspect as Griffin J. John II, of Bend, Oregon. A passerby shot him dead, police said. The suspect was a former Silver Rail student, Krantz revealed. The reason is still unknown. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said at Friday’s news conference that the classroom where the shooting occurred was a special needs classroom, and revealed that the suspect had been a special needs student at that school. The family of Kaylub Giamanco, who came forward as the man who shot and killed the suspect, told CBS News in a statement Friday that they are “not seeking recognition” and instead expressed gratitude to first responders, school staff and the community for “the outpouring of love and support.” Her two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary School. Monuments with flowers, balloons and stuffed animals appeared around the school, which is in a neighborhood full of newly built homes. Bend, which has about 100,000 residents, is the largest city in Central Oregon. Surrounded by mountains, its population has grown over the past three decades and it is a center of tourism and outdoor recreation, about 125 miles southeast of Portland.
