FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — An ICE agent is being held at a local hospital after police say he was shot after assaulting an elderly man and his daughter at a home in downtown Fresno. The incident occurred before 3:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Dudley and Broadway. The Fresno Police Department says a woman found 32-year-old David Gonzalez sleeping in her front yard. The woman told her 72-year-old father, who then came out to tell Gonzalez to leave. Once he woke Gonzalez up, police say he appeared drunk and attacked the 72-year-old woman. Police say the daughter tried to intervene to protect her father, and Gonzalez physically attacked her. Fearing for his safety, officers say the 72-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez. The woman’s boyfriend, who is a police officer and was off duty, arrived at the house and handcuffed Gonzalez. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is in serious condition. “They were nice, nice people. They’ve been here in that house for over 20 years. We’ve been here about 21 years. They’ve been here before us,” neighbor Kimberly Lindsay describes the victims. The elderly man who shot González does not face charges. Gonzalez is now in custody for felony assault. Authorities say he is a federal agent from Texas assigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Action News was there when detectives recovered a gun from the porch of the home, bagged it and took it away for processing. Police are still investigating why he was in the neighborhood where he was ultimately shot. Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias says many of the officers are from out of state and have been deploying in the early morning hours from the Tower. Theater. He believes Gonzalez was likely drinking in the tower district before the incident. “An off-duty ICE agent was partying at the Tower, clearly had too much, ended up in someone’s front yard which resulted in an incident,” Arias said. Fresno City Councilman Mike Karbassi released a statement about the incident, saying in part: “Enough is enough. We have endured days of fear-ridden law enforcement that has now escalated into outright violence. I call on ICE to suspend its ongoing operations in the Central Valley.”Stay with ABC30 for the latest details on this developing story.Copyright © 2026 KFSN-TV. All rights reserved.
