A New York City Police Department detective has been released from the hospital after being stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx last week, according to officials. Detective Jose Mercedes was wheeled out of Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday before standing in front of a group of applauding officers. “Today, in another incredible feat of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes stood up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet. Hundreds of NYPD members were there to cheer on his brother,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on of wheels from Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday before standing in front of a group of applauding officers. (NYPD) “The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the best detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime,” he added. Mercedes was off duty when two suspects on an electric bike tried to snatch her gold chain while she was cleaning the trunk of her car in the Norwood neighborhood Friday afternoon, according to officials. BLOCKED TRAFFIC, LEADING TO CHARGES The two attackers remain at large. (NYPD) The detective attempted to defend himself, but was stabbed and cut seven times during the struggle before the attackers fled. Authorities said the confrontation began when the men tried to steal her gold chain. Mercedes then pursued the fleeing attackers on foot for about two blocks before collapsing near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue. “Despite his serious injuries, Detective Mercedes pursued his attackers on foot,” Tisch said. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the detective in the hospital shortly after the attack.
