Complaints surrounding Insomniac’s Wolverine were persistent and loud even before its September 15 release. However, the developer is doing its best to calm the frenzied anger of players by fixing the fixable aspects of the game that players don’t like. According to IGN, the latest Wolverine update features three new disable settings for fans who don’t aggressively like the game’s tracking mechanics, as if Logan’s furry gloves gripping our own as we ferociously stab through wave after wave of robots and soldiers and robot soldiers is a bad thing. Players can now turn off the Whiskey Bottle Scent Trails, Material Box Audio Tracks, and Nightmare Gate Roots, which were previously things that directed you to the next interactive element via a visual representation of the mutant’s enhanced senses. Hidden in the patch notes is another fix involving the game’s strange (“strange” bathroom signs), which some players claimed were evidence that Insomniac had used generative AI during the game’s development. (Insomniac says: “No way, buddy.”) With this latest update, players can now enjoy Wolverine without having to look at the disconcerting bathroom signs and its pampered tracking lines (famously dubbed “fart gas” by Washington Post journalist Gene Park), which will surely temper players’ feelings about the game’s other perceived shortcomings. Oops, Talk Too Soon: Some of the game’s “scent trails” remain regardless of the changes, such as in story missions like “The One That Got Away” that requires Wolverine to track down telepath/mutant love interest Jean Grey, though IGN reports that Insomniac’s previous update “reduced the opacity of the trail” so as not to further provoke its ferocious player base.
