The next-generation Tesla Roadster will be unveiled on October 1, the automaker said Saturday. Tesla introduced the concept a decade ago and has since delayed its launch several times as it focuses on artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomy, which it believes are critical to unlocking future growth. This is the first time we’re seeing a concrete reveal timeline for the long-awaited model. The trailer reveals little about the Roadster, other than what appear to be its taillights and four circular elements on top that could be the SpaceX-developed cold gas thrusters that could make it fly. The Information reported last month that the Roadster’s launch was imminent and that the automaker was planning two versions: a limited edition of the “flying Roadster” and a road-legal model. That report also added that the demonstration vehicle will be operated remotely due to the noise and force of the SpaceX thrusters. The flying model could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more than a million. However, don’t be surprised if the so-called Flying Roadster is just a demo vehicle that Tesla uses to show off its technology, while the street-legal version ends up being the actual model on sale. Either way, we’ll find out soon. For years, Tesla executives have touted the next-generation Roadster. The automaker’s vice president of engineering, Lars Moravy, previously said the Roadster will be the “last and greatest driver’s car” and would be the company’s “swan song” before self-driving cars become ubiquitous.
