On a foggy, rainy day in 1984, a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Oslo skidded off the runway while landing at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The DC-10 skidded 600 feet off the pavement and plunged into an icy stream, forcing some passengers to swim to safety. But the 177 people on board escaped without fatalities.
