NEW YORK – A fan waving a Palestinian flag ran onto the field at 9:11 p.m. ET on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday at Yankee Stadium and was quickly tackled and detained by security. The fan entered the field from the left field seats and ran toward center field, evading several police officers and stadium security for a few seconds before being detained on the outfield grass. The New York Mets bullpen filled him with beer cans. He was booed as he left the stadium before the crowd erupted in unison with chants of “USA.” The Yankees declined to comment on the incident. The Mets had the bases loaded with leadoff hitter Francisco Lindor up 3-2 with two outs, with the Yankees leading 5-2. Headrick threw a few warm-up pitches during the delay and only needed one pitch to retire Lindor with a liner to the left-handed reliever. Before the game, the Yankees honored the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and had several members of the 2001 Yankees, including Derek Jeter, present for pregame ceremonies. The current war in Gaza was sparked by the October 7, 2023 assault on southern Israel, which was led by the Palestinian armed group Hamas and resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people. Since then, more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, Gaza’s Health Ministry said in April. It’s been more than 10 months since the Trump administration helped broker a truce in Gaza, but health officials there say more than 1,300 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire.
