After a bright start to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026, Caitlin Clark had a game to forget as the United States edged out Italy 55-52 on Sunday. Clark shot 0-for-6 from the floor, finishing with one point, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. That followed a record-breaking performance in Team USA’s first game. The United States’ overall production was its lowest in the World Cup since 1971, and it shot 28.6 percent overall, although it had more turnovers (14) than assists (11). As talented as Team USA is from top to bottom, A’ja Wilson’s absence looms large. The score could have been much different if the four-time WNBA MVP had been stationed in the paint. The United States closes the group stage on Monday against the Czech Republic, and it could be a great opportunity for Clark and others who lack much international experience. The Americans have already qualified for the quarterfinals by winning Group D. With little at stake, coach Kara Lawson may opt to rest her regular starters before the knockout stage. In that case, Clark would get plenty of playing time.
