This New Dreame Robomower’s Side Piece Seems Great at Edging

I liked Dreame’s A3 AWD Pro robotic lawnmower when I reviewed it last month and now, during IFA 2026, the company announced a follow-up called the A4 AWD Pro that brings with it several key improvements. Among them is a robotic arm that the company claims (based on its own lab testing, of course) can achieve “0cm edge cutting.” The A4 AWD Pro is guided by LiDAR, like its predecessor, but also uses satellite navigation for “centimeter-level positioning.” It can also “see” obstacles defined by trained AI algorithms and avoid them, and also features laterally oriented time-of-flight sensors to prevent sliding over slopes and infrared sensors to identify people and animals at the edges of boundaries. These edge sensors also guide that robotic cutting arm, according to the company’s press materials. © Dreame © Dreame Dreame is not alone in his dream of a robotic side arm for trimming. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear other automatic lawn mowers have small mechanical arms, in the same way that you see the extendable side brushes on so many robotic vacuums. For now, the best other robotic lawnmowers have been able to do is slide their cutting decks sideways to get closer to the side of your house or the edge of a sidewalk. But it’s never close enough that you don’t have to go back and clean up afterwards with an old hand weeder. © Dreame That robotic arm and the new sensors and navigation are not all the new features of the A4. In fact, Dreame seems to have completely rethought its approach. The robot no longer has omnidirectional wheels on the front, but instead uses servo-driven rotating wheels. The company says it gives the robot “tight turns, smoother curves, and flexible navigation against obstacles from multiple angles with minimal turf wear.” The latter is notable, as the A3 AWD Pro had a bad habit of tearing up chunks of grass, leaving bald patches on the grass. The A4 AWD Pro has no official release date for the US. The culprit, of course, is the ban on foreign robotics that requires manufacturers to prove that at least 65% of the parts that make up their robot vacuums are made in the US.
