Resident Evil 2 Director Says Capcom Is Making Current Resident Evil Games Too Damn Scary

In an interview with VGC, Hideki Kamiya, director of the original Resident Evil 2, made a bold statement: the current Resident Evils are too scary. Despite being a Resident Evil director from back in the day, Kamiya said he’s never been able to handle horror. “I don’t like horror, and I don’t like scary things. I can’t survive horror movies, and that was even the case in the past,” he said. That makes sense! Previous Resident Evil games, like the ones Kamiya worked on before moving to Platinum Games and now Clovers, mainly had a scary tone and vibe. Sure, there were monsters to fight, but the horror largely came from the atmosphere, not the threats posed by the horrendous enemies. But now, thanks to all the technological improvements, Kamiya says game developers can create monsters with a truly terrifying degree of realism. “The amount of crazy, horrible things that people are able to put on the screen is absolutely crazy,” he said. “And I think anyone who is on the Resident Evil teams at Capcom, at this point, must be completely desensitized to how terrifying what they’re doing is.” You are right. The monsters in Resident Evil 9 are truly disgusting to look at. And all the visual improvements included in murder simulator Grand Theft Auto VI could put its violence on the uncomfortable side of graphic. But Kamiya has a solution to these problems, and it’s a lot like the arachnaphobia mode that Xbox put in Grounded. “I legitimately wanted [Resident Evil Requiem] It would include some kind of non-horror mode for people like me.” I hope he gets what he wants, because it’s a shame a video game guy like him can’t play the games he had a hand in creating.
