5 people found shot to death in murder-suicide in Mundelein, Illinois, police say

Five people were found dead with gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide inside a home in the northern Chicago suburb of Mundelein on Sunday night. At 11:45 p.m. Sunday, Mundelein Police were called to a welfare check at a home in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue. Inside, officers found three men and two women dead. The five had apparently been shot at point-blank range with a pistol. A preliminary investigation determined that the five people died in an apparent murder-suicide. Police said four of the victims were family members, while the fifth was involved in a domestic relationship with the alleged shooter. None of the names of the five people have been revealed. Two guns were found at the scene. Mundelein police were investigating along with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Police said the incident appears to be isolated and there is no threat to the public. CBS News Chicago was at the scene when investigators removed three bodies on stretchers around 7 a.m. Each one was covered with a black sheet. The bodies were placed in a black van. Some time later, investigators were seen attempting to break into a Volkswagen with Illinois plates. The vehicle was parked in the parking lot of a funeral home that borders the red house. The car was wrapped in crime scene tape, but its relevance to the death investigation was unclear. The Lake County Coroner’s Office reported that it appeared all of the victims had died from gunshot wounds. The names of the dead had not been released as of midday Monday. The deaths caused neighbors up and down the block to express a sense of shock, horror and disbelief. “This morning, around five in the morning, helicopters were flying over and I didn’t know what it was,” said a neighbor who asked not to be identified. Neighbors said a retired couple who ran a veterinary clinic in Libertyville had lived in the home for decades. They said the family was calm. A neighbor who did not want to be identified fears that one of the victims may be the owner of the house. “He greeted people. He was friendly. I have a cat that goes out and runs around while I garden, and he always talked to me about my cat. He knew cats. He loved cats,” she said. “She had a clear mind. Her mind was focused and positive. She was a great neighbor.” Rosa Berneo said she worked with the family for years. “The best bosses I’ve ever had in my life,” he said. “It was very painful. I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it and I still can’t believe it, because they were such nice people.” Police have not revealed a motive or said who might have pulled the trigger and killed the people in the home. Prior to Sunday night, Mundelein police had not received any calls for service at that home. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Mundelein police at 847-968-4600.
