1 person killed, 8 others injured in Haverford Township crash captured on video

HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — One man was killed and eight other people were injured Saturday in a multi-vehicle crash that damaged 16 vehicles in Haverford Township, according to police. Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola said the crash began at Darby Road and West Chester Pike and ended about 1.5 miles away at West Chester Pike and Eagle Road around 12:15 p.m. Police believe the driver of a gray pickup truck, a man in his 60s, experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Viola said the driver began traveling erratically at a high speed and crashed into several vehicles along the road. Surveillance video captured the end of the crash, showing the van traveling down the street, striking stopped vehicles, rolling onto its side and finally crashing into a U-Haul truck. Witnesses described the incident as chaotic. “It’s a very sad thing that happened,” said Yusuf Peters of Upper Darby. Rob Rothacker of Bethlehem said, “It was just bang, bang, bang, bang. I looked in my rearview mirror and cars were going left and right.” Another witness said: “Then the next thing you know it was crash noise, glass noise, metal crushing.” Viola said the scale of the accident was surprising. “I would say impressive. It takes you back a little bit that you have to look at the whole scene and realize how many people were injured here and the number of cars that were severely damaged,” he said. He said. Authorities said eight people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Viola said those who were hospitalized are expected to recover. One person involved in the accident said: “I feel very lucky to come out of this.” Drivers whose vehicles were damaged said they can be repaired. “Who cares, it’s a car that could be replaced. This guy can’t be replaced. Hopefully all these other people that went to the hospital are okay,” Rothacker said. Copyright © 2026 WPVI-TV. All rights reserved.
